Trip Overview

This 5-day Spoonie Birding Expedition tour will start from Yangon and end back in Yangon. This Birding tour is designed to explore mudflats in the Gulf of Martaban (Mottama) that is the Myanmar’s fourth Ramsar as well as one of the world’s most important wintering areas for the Critically Endangered Spoon-billed Sandpiper. This is also a beautiful gulf with extensive mud flats set against the stunning backdrop of the famous Mount Kyaikthiyo and Mount Kaylartha.  Being a highly-productive gulf with sediment and nutrients from three major rivers and supporting abundant invertebrates providing foods about 150,000 migratory water birds including half the global wintering population of the Critically Endangered Spoon-billed Sandpiper. We will begin our private full day birding excursion by picking you up at your hotel in Yangon or Yangon International Airport and make a private driving north towards the small town of Kyaikhto where we spend the night, waiting for high tide in order to set sail for the target mudflat areas from a small creek. Kyaikhto is an ideal place for starting to take a boat ride to the mudflat areas in the Gulf of Martaban a. We spend three full days exploring the mudflat areas, searching in particular for the Critically Endangered Spoon-billed Sandpipers, along with a large number of seabirds, shorebirds and other migratory birds such as Black-tailed Godwit, Bar-tailed Godwit, Whinbrel, Eurasian Curlew, Common Greenshank, Nordmann’s Greenshank, Little Ringed Plover, Kentish Plover, Lesser Sand-plover, Long-billed Plover, Greater Sand-plover, Pacific Golden Plover, Curlew Sandpiper, Wood Sandpiper,  Marsh Sandpiper, Caspian Tern, White-winged Tern, Whiskered Tern, Ruddy  Turnstone, Red-nacked Stint, Black-winged Stilt, Long-toed Stint, Red-wattled Lapwing, Grey-headed Lapwing, Painted Stork and various gulls. After scanning the mudflat areas of Martaban, we return to Yangon to conclude the Spoonie birding expedition with a private transfer back to your hotel or to Yangon International airport for your international departure flight home.
