Highlight of Southern Myanmar (Extension tour)
Trip Overview
This 5-day Highlight of Southern Myanmar birding tour will take us to the lowland tropical forest of Nenya Reserve Forest in southern Myanmar sharing a border with southern Thailand on the Malay Peninsula. This entire area was previously off-limits to foreigners and remains largely unexplored even today. The reserved forest will be officially designated as national park in the near future and support one of the world’s most sought-after and endangered Gurney’s Pitta. We begin our birding tour by picking you up at your hotel in Yangon and travel south on a domestic flight to Myeik, which is located on the coastline of southern Myanmar. We will see flying across the Gulf of Martaban and Andaman Sea. Upon arriving at the Myeik airport, we take a six hour drive by 4WDs that will take us deep into the Reserved Forest. We will spend three nights at our campsites in the forest, where we will base ourselves, from which we will explore the best birding sites in the lowland tropical forest, focusing our attention in particular on the world’s most sought-after and endangered Gurney’s Pitta, but we may encounter other Malay Peninsula species such as Oriental Pied Hornbill, Great Hornbill, Helmeted Hornbill, White-crowned Hornbill, Rufous-necked Hornbill, Plain-pouched Hornbill, Wreathed Hornbill, Large Green Pigeon, Thick-billed Green Pigeon, Asian Fairy Bluebird, Greater Green Leafbird, Lesser Green Leafbird, Gold-whiskered Barbet, Green Broadbill, Long-tailed Broadbill, Dusky Broadbill, Silver-breasted Broadbill, Black-and-red Broadbill, Banded Broadbill, Black-and-yellow Broadbill, Dark-throated Oriole, Long-billed Spiderhunter, Streaked Spiderhunter, Red-throated Sunbird, Crimson Sunbird, Ruby-cheeked Sunbird, Purple-naped Sunbird, Van Hasselt’s Sunbird, Hooded Pitta, Blue-Winged Pitta, Blue Pitta, Rusty-naped Pitta, Spot-necked Babbler, Chestnut-winged Babbler, Large Scimitar-babbler, White-browed Scimitar-babbler, Short-tailed Babbler, Ferruginous Babbler, Collared Babbler, Rufous Woodpecker, Banded Woodpecker, Himalayan Flameback, Greater Flameback, Bamboo Woodpecker, Maroon Woodpecker, Bay Woodpecker, Buff-rumped Woodpecker, Great Slaty Woodpecker, During the course of birding in the forest all meals (B/L/D) will be served by our cook. On our final morning in the forest, we spend some time birding around the camp site before leaving Lenya. Departing the Nenya forest, we make our way back to Myeik, where we stay overnight. Next morning we enjoy our free time at our hotel before we leave the hotel. We take a private transfer to the Myeik airport and board our domestic flight back to Yangon.
